A Gentle Approach
Many people know that yoga can be a wonderful way to strengthen your body and get fit. But for Christi Dysart, the founder and accomplished instructor behind lulu ❁ yoga TV, the practice means much more. “I started teaching in-person classes 10 years ago and my focus initially was on trying to create a class that was open to practitioners of any level. But when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, my perspective shifted and I started paying more attention to the healing benefits of yoga- not just physical, but emotional as well.”
Today, Christi’s yoga practice has come to be defined by a focus on the power of spiritual resilience and self-acceptance. Her classes may not feature ultra-athletic poses or tests of endurance, but everyone from super-flexible yogis to total novices can appreciate the what her teaching style is calling them to do: slow down, and check in with their bodies. Her practice is also reaching a group that’s often under-served in most modern yoga classes. “Most of my students are people who might be experiencing physical limitations. Through yoga, they can come to understand the limits of their mobility in a healthy way, and can find a way to exist in their bodies joyfully.”
Connecting in an uncertain time
Christi had been keen on the idea of an app for her business for a while, but didn’t have concrete plans. When the pandemic rolled around, the issue became more pressing. “For a while I was teaching classes on a live-streaming platform and recording sessions. Eventually I realized I could utilize those class recordings to create a nice full library of class options- and that’s when I was inspired to really get the app up and running.” She looked to Odeum to distribute her offerings across multiple platforms, and package her content professionally. “The staff is super supportive and encouraging, and the whole experience has allowed me to grow so much as a teacher. I want to take advantage of the platform even more than I already have, which is why I’ll be broadcasting live classes soon.
